DID YOU KNOW?

Who are these three athletes on the same podium step?

Three joint Olympic champions! This has happened only twice in the history of the Olympic Games – both times in the pommel horse event. It first occurred at the Olympic Games London 1948, when three Finnish gymnasts – Veikko Huhtanen, Paavo Aaltonen and Heikki Savolainen – finished the event with the exact same score. It was the same story at the Olympic Games Seoul 1988 with Lubomir Geraskov (BUL), Zsolt Borkai (HUN) and Dmitri Bilozerchev (URS). On both occasions, all three gymnasts won a gold medal, and no silver or bronze medal was awarded. These situations are rare and are unlikely to happen again, as nowadays there are tie-breaking rules in place to decide between gymnasts in Olympic competitions.
