DEAR FRIENDS OF OLYMPIC STUDIES

In our ambition to foster education, research and studies and make Olympic knowledge accessible to all, we look back at the last year not only with pride, but also with much gratefulness.

We thank all those of you who have so generously shared their time, expertise and knowledge with us, be it as editors, authors or advisors and helped us bring new resources to life, which will serve our global audience of educators, researchers, students and professionals.

Below you can already discover the first of such initiatives, a new Reference Document on Pierre de Coubertin. Others articles and teaching resources will be published in the coming weeks.

We are also very happy to see that the Olympic World Library (OWL) and the extensive and ever-growing library collection is being increasingly recognised and leveraged. Our efforts to permanently enrich our digital collection, through acquisition, digitisation and by offering new thematic pages and resources have been considerable. What better reward than to hear from you that this has been useful and that many of you are giving access to the OWL via your platforms and programmes.

The same is true for our growing network of academic Olympic Studies and Research Centres, which is giving wonderful opportunities for exchanges, collaborations and learning between scholars around the world.

We look with excitement to the Olympic year 2024, in particular to many rich encounters and exchanges being planned.

REPRESENTATIVES OF OSRCS COME TOGETHER IN PYEONGCHANG

Upon the invitation of the academic Olympic Studies and Research Centres (OSRCs) of the Korea National Sport University and the Kangwon National University (Korea) with the generous support of the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation, representatives of  25 OSRCs came together for a conference in PyeongChang at the end of November to share research outcomes and initiatives and identify opportunities for collaboration. 

The event provided a meaningful platform to meet and exchange knowledge, experiences and developments between all participants.

NEW REFERENCE DOCUMENT ABOUT PIERRE DE COUBERTIN

We are thrilled to announce the publication of a new OSC Reference Document “Pierre de Coubertin - Life, vision, influences and achievements of the founder of the modern Olympic Games”.

Fully available in digital format in English and French, this document offers 60 short and concise entries which allow the reader to easily navigate to a topic of interest. 

This publication is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the Olympic Studies Centre, the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee and the Comité Français Pierre de Coubertin, and it has been possible thanks to the generous contribution from experts from around the world. 

Well documented, sourced and richly illustrated, this document should serve as a reliable source of reference for educational, academic, cultural, Olympic Games-related or other initiatives moving forward.

NEW ON THE SHELF: IMPACT AND LEGACY REPORTS OF THE GAMES

Various Organising Committees of the Olympic Games have recently published reports and strategies on their impact and legacy. Here are some recent releases you should know about:

REPORTS FROM THE 2022/2023 ADVANCED OLYMPIC RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAMME

We congratulate the grant holders of the 2022/2023 edition of the Advanced Programme who have contributed with their research to enriching the studies and knowledge on areas of interest for the IOC. Five out of the seven final reports for this edition are already available on the Olympic World Library:

The two pending reports will be published at the beginning of next year.

The 2025/2027 edition of the Advanced Research Grant Programme will be launched in October 2024. More information here.

VISITS AT THE OLYMPIC STUDIES CENTRE

We have had the pleasure to welcome over 310 researchers, students and Olympic Movement representatives to the OSC over these last three months, including Olympian and assistant professor at Kokugakuin University Tatsuki Machida (figure skating, Sochi 2014, Japan), and students from the AISTS (Switzerland), UNIL (Switzerland), Ara Institute of Canterbury (New Zealand), Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (Türkiye) and University of Arizona (USA).

We were also glad to receive the President and General Director of the International Olympic Academy (IOA), Isidoros Kouvelos and Makis Asimakopoulos, a great opportunity to discuss synergies and further opportunities for collaboration between the IOA and OSC.
